The former military site in Nohra was one of the largest Soviet air bases in East Germany. It stood close to the border with the West, so it was a strategic location during the Cold War. Up to 5,000 soldiers lived here, together with a large helicopter squadron. The area was closed to East German citizens and surrounded by fences. For many locals, the airfield was a hidden world. After the fall of the Soviet Union, the soldiers left and most buildings were demolished. The Soviet Army used this place from 1945 until 1992. Today, only a few ruins and monuments remain, showing how big and important this base once was. Only the statue of Lenin is left.

Fashionista Lenin

Forget the Red Square; Fashionista Lenin is ready for the catwalk. With one hand casually holding his lapel, he poses in a way that shows he cares about the style of his waistcoat as much as he does about the means of production. This is an unusual, cutting-edge appearance for the Soviet leader, demonstrating that even a revolution can gain from a touch of high-fashion style and a well-matched color scheme.

Cleaned it and repaired

The statue was saved by the local development company. They cleaned it and repaired it. Now the stone looks fresh again. The wall behind it is painted in a bright red color. Nature grows wild around it. The road in front is broken and cracked. The mix of old and new feels strange but also interesting. Many visitors say it looks like art. It is history that you can see and touch.

The unknown soldier

Next to Lenin once stood a monument to the unknown soldier. This statue was not repaired. Trees and bushes grow around it. The red star is almost gone. The stone is falling apart. It shows how fast history can disappear.

For many years, people talked about opening the area to the public. A historical group wanted to create a small museum in one of the old guardhouses. They wanted to tell the story of the Soviet garrison in Nohra. But the plan failed. The buildings were too damaged. Today, the area belongs to a private company. A wildlife park will be built here. Most of the site is behind a fence.

Still, Lenin stands outside the fence. Everyone can come and visit him. Local people sometimes come to talk, sing, or remember. Some call the statue a warning from the past. Others see it as an important symbol. It shows the time of the Cold War, the fight against Imperialism, and the dreams of socialism.
