Lenin Quotes and slogans

These quotes come from speeches, texts, and slogans that once had clear political power. Paint fades. Letters break. Meanings shift. In some places, the words feel ignored. In others, they still provoke strong reactions. By photographing them as I found them, I document how history stays visible.

The quote is located above the stage in the cultural house of Chernobyl-2, an abandoned Soviet military village in Ukraine. It was home of the ‘Duga-1 Radar.’ The old village is situated in the woods, about 10 kilometers south of Chernobyl and Pripyat. It used to be a top-secret military site during Soviet times.

Lenin really stressed the need for military readiness and professional training, not just for the Red Army but also for the working class. Particularly during the early days of the Soviet state. This message was a recurring theme for soldiers, party members, and even everyday citizens, encouraging them to approach military training and defense preparation with seriousness and professionalism.

Study military affairs in a proper way.

These quote was found in the abandoned Soviet barracks in Möhlau, Germany. The text on the red cloth is a quote by Vladimir Lenin in Russian. The sentence comes from a text Lenin wrote in 1919, during the Russian Civil War, emphasizing the necessity of discipline within the Red Army.

To win, you need iron military discipline.

This panel is a Soviet propaganda board commemorating the 60th anniversary of the founding of the USSR. The small flags and shields probably represent the emblems of the various Soviet republics. I photographed it at the entrance of the clinic in the military ghost town Chernobyl-2 in Ukraine. The board commemorates the period from 1922 to 1982.

Translated: ‘Unbreakable Union of Free Republics,’ the first line of the Soviet anthem.

We want a voluntary union of nations.

In the same clinic in the military village Chernobyl-2, I found this second board, also with a Lenin quote. The text on the left is the oath that medical graduates in the Soviet Union took when beginning their medical careers.

Communist labor is labor that is not performed to fulfill a specific duty but is voluntary labor, performed without expectation of reward, labor as a need of a healthy organism.

In the area of Drögen, close to Fürstenberg, two Soviet relief walls have stood the test of time. This monument is made up of several large concrete panels. One of the panels illustrates the Soviet advance from Russia to Berlin. Additionally, you can spot a faded representation of the Kremlin along with a Soviet seal. Another panel showcases historical illustrations of agriculture and industrial labor, accompanied by a quote from Lenin.

It is impossible to make a country capable of defense without the greatest heroism of the people, who carry out bold and decisively great economic transformations.

I took pictures of these panels at the old military complex in Forst Zinna. Initially, the SS, known as the Schutzstaffel, used the complex. From 1935 onwards, it served as a training camp for the Artillerieschule Jüterbog. Right after the Second World War ended, the Soviets took control of the area. In the now abandoned buildings I found these panels with Soviet-era propaganda materials.

The left quote is frequently associated with Lenin’s political report at the 7th Congress of the R.C.P.B. in March 1918, where he emphasized the importance of discipline, order, and thorough military readiness after the revolution. The original phrase from that speech was longer: “Our slogan must be one: to study military affairs in a proper way, to introduce order on the railways.”

Study military affairs in a proper way.

The second quote comes from Lenin’s speech at the Extraordinary Fourth All-Russia Congress of Soviets in 1918, where he defended the signing of the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk.

The one who has the greatest technology, organization, discipline, and the best machines will win.

This stage is an element of Grūtas Park, an open-air museum founded by businessman Viliumas Malinauskas. The stage you see in the photo is part of the thematic structure of the park itself. It is not a preserved Soviet stage that was used during the Soviet era.

Menas priklauso liaudžiai!

Art belongs to the people!

Inside the Estonian Peat Museum, a small museum inside the Tootsi Briquette Factory, I found this Lenin quote on a showcased flag. The Tootsi Briquette Factory was originally established in 1937 as Pööravere Briketitööstus. The factory was quickly renamed Tootsi during construction, after the nearby train station.

Me jõuame kommunistliku töö võiduni.

We will achieve the victory of communist labor

I found this text in Armenia, inside the abandoned culture house of a tool-making factory. It is a slogan used in Soviet-era political propaganda. It resembles typical Soviet propaganda celebrating the Communist Party, Lenin, and unity, but it is not a documented line from Lenin himself.

Long live the Leninist Communist Party of the Soviet Union!
In unity with the people is the strength of the Party!
In unity with the Party, in its leadership is the strength of the people!
